What is it and how do we delineate between the world we like and the default world? I hear it repeated over and over again by people across the BM spectrum. If BRC is not within the default world, where is it?
From Wikipedia:
"Cognitive dissonance is a psychological term describing the uncomfortable tension that may result from having two conflicting thoughts at the same time, or from engaging in behavior that conflicts with one's beliefs, or from experiencing apparently conflicting phenomena.
In simple terms, it can be the filtering of information that conflicts with what you already believe, in an effort to ignore that information and reinforce your beliefs. In detailed terms, it is the perception of incompatibility between two cognitions, where "cognition" is defined as any element of knowledge, including attitude, emotion, belief, or behavior. The theory of cognitive dissonance states that contradicting cognitions serve as a driving force that compels the mind to acquire or invent new thoughts or beliefs, or to modify existing beliefs, so as to reduce the amount of dissonance (conflict) between cognitions. Experiments have attempted to quantify this hypothetical drive. Some of these have examined how beliefs often change to match behavior when beliefs and behavior are in conflict.
Social psychologist Leon Festinger first proposed the theory in 1957 after the publication of his book When Prophecy Fails, observing the counterintuitive belief persistence of members of a UFO doomsday cult and their increased proselytization after the leader's prophecy failed. The failed message of earth's destruction, purportedly sent by aliens to a woman in 1956, became a disconfirmed expectancy that increased dissonance between cognitions, thereby causing most members of the impromptu cult to lessen the dissonance by accepting a new prophecy: that the aliens had instead spared the planet for their sake.[1]"
Wouldn't the ideal be to expand BRC to take over the world so that this awful cognitive dissonance will stop blaring in my head? It seems a bit backwards though, only being able to escape the horrible dissonance once a year and then for only a week. I love BM and everyone that makes it happen, together we can heal ourselves, but how???

Re: Default World, Cognitive dissonance
Sun, October 14, 2007 - 7:23 PMBut it's that cognitive dissonance that jars us from our reality and opens the eyes to possibility. If real life became too much like BM, we'd have to work a LOT harder to be all that "radical" business. -

Fri, October 19, 2007 - 12:18 PMI welcome the growth that would come. Imagine that world for a second, people only doing what they love and taking care of themselves and the earth, and then trying to top themselves by being even better and more conscous. Imagine how trully outlandish burning man would be in that world, how much more organic technology would be. The moment when the human creative potential is reached, that critical moment where the tipping point in our hearts is reached(thinf the story of the hundredth monkey en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hund...ey_Effect, note that though the effect was dissproved, the behavior DID spread throughout the population by imitation of A BETTER WAY), it will become the mainstream culture. When we genetically engineer our machines, make all technology envioronmentally friendly, we will have unleashed the long repressed human crative spirit and it will permeate everything. The Crucible is a great example of the wonders that can emerge when people bring BRC home.

Re: Default World, Cognitive dissonance
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 12:57 PMExactly. So BM is an example of a very small percentage (compared to 6 billion) creative folks, being free, living their passion. Imagine the whole world, all those people, listening to their soul and spirit and creating magical wonderful splendors, whatever that may be to them.
Someone might wanna be a cowboy. Well giddy up! Another guy wants to be a fairy, wave that wand! Someone else wants to be a holy prostitute, and another paint huge murals on all the ugly freeway structures around the country. Well, let's keep it going!
Burning Man HAS to grow, not as a festival, but as a context for freedom and expression. It's gotta merge with other similar festivals/collectives around the world. These nodes of light have gotta connect until we weave a wonderful web around this Earth. Cuz she needs us to be beautiful..... and keep on keepin' on.

Re: Default World, Cognitive dissonance
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 3:35 PMCommon question, uncommon answer?
I believe it is a myth that no one would do the dirty jobs. Who does the sewage at BM? Volunteers? Perhaps robots could, or ameoba, or exotic algae, or just maybe, each living unit would have it's own waistproccessing facility, power generation capacity, and even produce foods, while creating no waste....
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckminster_Fuller
We have designed our systems today to only take into account our immediant needs. At the Bioneers conference this weekend their are thirteen indigenous grandmothers coming together from different parts of the world so that they can share their ancient wisdom and science.
www.bioneers.org/node/1768
Many other pioneers in biologically responsible practices will be there as well. The conference is a little pricey, but cheaper than BM, and chocked full of practical information to better inform our way of being with the earth. This is crucial and if we don't stop thinking like spoiled children we'll destroy our only play pin.
Friends of mine have changed their homes and businesses plumbing so that grey water from sinks and showers are used to flush toilets. To really change things we have to escape our own infantile behaviors. Creating nuclear waste that will be with us for the life of our species is not clever or worthy of the Infinite void in which we have come to exist. We are creatures of light, literally coalesced after a kazillion year proccess and this is the best we can do?
To conclude my response about the sewage, I would ask another question in return. In a world we respect and a life fueled by the craving to be the best humans we can possibly be, who in this world would want to work in a cubicle? That seems to me a much more horrid fate than having to take out the trash and deal with the sewage. What if our pay scales were commenserate not with profitability, but instead were measured by the degree to which the job is usefull to society? If Doctors were paid the same as sanitation workers, wouldn't the cubicles go vacant and the status be reversed? Might people not swarm to do such work?
But sadly, judging from the way things are going now, it seems we reward people with high incomes who are utterly incompetent for the grave and wonderful task at hand. As far as I have been able to percieve, politicians and corporate executives are paid to lie, issue false platitudes, kiss ass real good, perpetuate all of the foul cliquesh behaviors found in highscool, and lie to cover up their mistakes and wrong doing and are promoted and elected in direct proportion to the degree they can fulfill these functions.
Look no furthur than the present presidential race for proof. The leading Democrat voted for the war in Iraq (clinton) and just recently designated another countries military(Iranian National Guard), who have never engaged in an aggressive war, a terrorist organization! This gives bush the authority to strike without approval of congress another country that has done nothing to us, (AGAIN). If we can have nukes and they are ok, why can't they? Perhaps we should stop trying to influence people at gunpoint and should lead by example...lets dismantle our nukes and create a world in which we can live without having both sides of a conflict be sold weapons and huge profits being made at the expense of members of our own species. We are giving these horrid people power.
www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20997509/
Notice in the above that one of the last questions was which candidate avoided answering questions the most and who had the most rehearsed answers. For at least Hillary, Obama, and Edwards(whom I kinda like), they scored high in these qualities as well as in their popularity(who stood out from the pack.
You can also watch the debate on Youtube, be sure to vote for who you like in the online polls. It is our way to influence the medias perspective.
www.youtube.com/watch
Why is Clinton at the top of the polls if she is just a bush in clinton garb? Perhaps because the media: 1.Does not ask about less known democratic contenders in their poll, 2. and assume with the questions they are asking that she is the front runner.

I know many people don't think voting is'nt a way to change things for the better. Isn't it convinient that we believe the horrible status quo is inevitable?? we must vote AND change ourselves to end the horrible efects of our species and live in harmony with the earth or we will destroy the most beautiful thing we have known.
Tirade over, for now....

I work in a cube...i do many things...i am pretty happy and self fulfilled. there is so much more to my life than what i do for a living that my cube time cannot even stop it (meaning i do outside work from my cubicle....)
you may speak for yourself, sure! but dont take away my cubicle which allows me to be in a band, do photography, write poems, cater, event coordinate, volunteer FOR THE CRUCIBLE, build camps, travel, work on my film short, travel, inline skate, hike, backpack....
not everyone is in the hell you imagine.

Re: Default World, Cognitive dissonance
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 8:51 PMRight, what Synge said about volunteers.
When I'm in a situation where I feel free to be myself and that many of my needs are understood and taken care of, then I'm happy to give my part and volunteer as well. This seems to be a pretty natural progression towards caring for the common good. We volunteer at BM because we value the society that it creates. If we truly felt value in energy and services provided in the default world, I mean, if we really were stoked about our homes, neighborhoods, jobs, creative outlets, etc... then we'd be a lot more likely to help out in return.

Re: Default World, Cognitive dissonance
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 5:06 AM"Sure, but who would deal with the sewage? "
Just some food for thought......
I saw a talk show once where this genius child was totaly obsessed with waist management & another where a child was completly obsessed with his vaccum cleaner collection & vaccuming in general. So believe it or not there are people who's bliss or perhaps calling is to serve humanity in this way. I've often thought that sanitation workers aught to get respect like Dr's......after all if we didn't have them, just think how many more people would be sick & what our landscape might look like ( think Paris during the plague).
-but, it certainly is not a job that I could do, which makes me even more thankfull to the people who do it.
