Re: Photo/Essay
Wed, December 19, 2007 - 10:43 AMI, personally, do not agree with this statement. I did not participate in BM "to see and be seen". It was a personal experience, and will continue to be so. I didn't hit all of the "hot spots" at nighttime, like some people might have.
I think there are many sub-groups of people that attend BM. And, of course, some people may agree with this "At the core being there is about seeing and being seen" theory.
That's just my own 2cents.

Re: Photo/Essay
Wed, December 19, 2007 - 3:10 PMi very much do not agree with that statement
i have been extremely involved going on seven years, have run a theme camp since my second year, have volunteered more and more every year and the other 51 weeks of the year i am a regional contact and the reason i go to burning man and devote gross amounts of time and energy towards building the community is to allow people to be awake and live.
i had the blessed opportunity a few months ago to show a six year old her first disco ball, the wonder, awe and amazement was something i will never forget....to have the opportunity to expose people to their proverbial disco ball and to constantly be discovering my own..whether that is through art, expression, community, fellowship, food, love, or simply not wearing pants for a week....thats the core for me...

Re: Photo/Essay
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 8:17 AMI don't think that's why I'm going. I heard of burning man when I was 16, I thought it was an amazing idea and then never really thought of it again. As I got more wrapped up in the material world (and oddly more unhappy) I completely forgot about Burning man. somehow I wound up on experience.net and someone mentioned that they were going to burning man and it was as if flood gates had opened, I decided then and there that I would be attending this year. Oddly, 9 years later and a continent apart, I'm going with the girl that told me about burning man all those years ago - it's funny how life works out like that.
I'm going, well in some senses, for a personal spiritual experience, a chance to step away from what I've gathered around me so I can look at it and decide what's important. It's an incredible longing that's taking me to burning man, not the need to see and be seen. However, I can see others going for that reason I suppose, so I think that one inflammatory line could have been worded a bit differently, but I understand what she was trying to say.
